The Dirty World of Data Recovery…..

Today has been a rather expensive day….

I found out about two weeks ago that my external hard drive which contained all my traveling photos (about 8 years worth) decided to shit it self and not turn back on…Fortunately I was lucky enough to get them recovered, unfortunately it cost me about 180 pounds….(oh yes this was negotiated down) – Whilst the romantic in my is sighing with relief, the chinese part of me is swearing under his breath….. partly because of the extortionate amount of money, but mostly because I didn’t understand how the shop had come up with this magical number…

The convo went a bit like this:
Me: Hi, did you manage to diagnose my hard drive?
Micromend: Yes, the good news is your external case is still working, the bad news is your hard drive is broken…
Me: Urgh… do you know if i can recover it? I just really need to save my photos
Micromend: Yes… how much money do you have?
Me: uhhhhh I budgeted around 100 quid for this
Micromend: Oh good – we were thinking about 200 – but we’ll only charge 150…

Right so a few mistakes were made by me there – I probably shouldn’t have been so quick to propose a price (arghhhhh the first lesson of negotiations – my old trading manager would be appalled). But who could blame me – 8 Years of precious photos were at risk here, I was panicking….
